There was less baking then I was led to believe. Book 2 has a lot more, and it was nice to see! I enjoyed that a lot. I will say there isn’t much in terms of LGBTQ+ rep until the very end of Book 1. Art is obviously a huge factor in graphic novels, so if I don’t click with the art, I usually can’t fully enjoy the story. Bitty’s artwork was ok, but some of the characters I just didn’t like how they were drawn. It was ok, but something about it just bothered me.
Personally, I wasn’t a huge fan of this art style. I’m glad I finished at the end of the day, but this wasn’t my favorite series unfortunately. But I also considering DNF-ing halfway through Book 2. I honestly considering DNF-ing halfway through Book 1, but I pushed through and then it had a cliffhanger ending so I HAD to read Book 2. You don’t need to know sports to enjoy this, but I think it would help a lot. 3.5 stars isn’t bad! I enjoyed this series! But it does have a lotttttt of hockey talk and I know absolutely nothing about any of the sports balls and their homeruns and touchdowns and goals. I’m giving the overall series a 3.5 rating. (He does have a few flaws which we find out during the series.) IT WARMS MY HEART! Bitty is one of the cutest and genuine characters you will ever meet in any story ever.
These took me way longer than usual graphic novels, but don’t give up. There is a lot of art and a lot of text per page, so buckle in for the ride. What nobody tells you is how HEFTY these books are! I’m used to shorter graphic novels and comics, but this one is intense. And that there was an LGBTQ+ romance.īook 1, Bitty’s Year 1 and 2 of college, came out in 2018, and Book 2, Year 3 and 4 of his college career, only came out in April 2020 – so this year was the perfect time for me to pick up both volumes and binge! This review won’t have any spoilers for either book, just my general thoughts. Going into this series, I knew exactly two things: Bitty, the MC, was cute as heck and liked baking, and hockey. Book 1: Hockey and Book 2: Sticks & Scones Once my library reopened after quarantine for curbside pickup (and now they’re open inside as well) the first thing I did was request a TON of graphic novels! I have seen soooo many of you talking about the Check, Please! series on bookstragram and had to check it out for myself!
